The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen is a French scent hound that was bred primarily to hunt small game over rough terrain. They are known for their rough, unrefined outlines, a proudly carried head with definitive long brows, beard and moustache. The tail is strong and tapered and it has been said they carry the tail like a saber, alert and ready. It was in August 2004 that the breed was finally accepted in the AKC Foundation Stock Service.

Grand Basset Griffon Vendéens are considered a well balanced, medium height hound. Rough coated with an intelligent look and noble bearing. While still bred to hunt game they are also bred to be companion dogs. These dogs are very independent and energetic, however obedience is not their strong suit and they require constant training and socialization.

They have also been referred to as happy and outgoing and not easily agitated. The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen is good with children and other dogs. Since this breed is naturally active and energetic they need plenty of exercise and around 2 hours a day of active exercise. It is difficult for them to live in area that is limited on space.

The wiry fur of the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen sets it apart from other hound dogs. The fur needs to be hand striped on an annual basis. They have a rough and harsh topcoat and a thick weather resistant undercoat.

The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen is one of the hardiest and healthiest breeds around. They can be prone to ear infections and hip dysplasia.

The Griffon Vendeen family can be traced back to 16th century France, one of the few to have four distinct sizes. Originally there was only one size of the Bassett, a French hound scent, who nowadays would look like a mixture of the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen and the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen.
