The Great Dane is a large dog that combines nobility and power with robustness and elegance. They have long muscular necks and the front legs are perfectly straight. The combination of physical and mental well being results in a majesty possessed by no other breed.

A Great Dane has been referred to as a gentle giant. They are playful and patient with children, dignified and affectionate. This dog loves to be around people and doesn’t bark much unless it is needed. They are a steady dog, responsible and dependable as well as brave and loyal.

Because of their giant size the Great Dane should be thoroughly obedience trained when young so that it will be manageable when fully grown. They can develop a habit of leaning against people and should be trained not to do so, especially children. It is not trying to hurt anyone, but if it leans against a child it may result in injury.

A Great Dane has a smooth short-haired coat that is easy to groom. Bathing this giant is a major chore so it pays to avoid the need by daily grooming. The nails need to be kept trimmed and they shed very little.

Unfortunately the Great Dane is not a long lived breed and you need to make sure you are dealing with a conscientious breeder. They are prone to hip dysplasia, tumors, and heart disease and tail injuries.

If you were to see Greek money from about 36 B.C. you would notice the image of a dog, very similar to the Great Dane. The Germans had this powerful mastiff like dog that was capable of overcoming bears and wild boars and a process of selective breeding began. These dogs were crossed with Irish Greyhounds, which resulted in the Great Danes of today.
