The Great Pyrenees is also known as a Pyrenean Mountain Dog, a large animal with a solid muscular body. This dog looks a lot like brown bear except for its light coloring. The Great Pyrenees gives the distinct impression of elegance and beauty combine with great overall size and majesty. They show the unmistakably purpose for which they have been bred, guarding flocks in all types of weather on the mountain slopes of the Pyrenees.
A Great Pyrenees is a capable and imposing guardian, devoted to their family and somewhat wary of strangers - human or canine. They are courageous, loyal, obedient and very gentle to the ones they love. They do best with children when raised with them from puppy hood. They do have an independent and sometimes stubborn nature and will try to dominate a less secure owner.
However, a great deal of patience may be required when training the Great Pyrenees, as they can be slightly difficult. It is best to socialize and train this breed properly to insure good citizenship. A Great Pyrenees is good with non-canine animals and usually loves cats. They don’t reach maturity until they are about 2 years old.
They have a weather resistant double coat with a long, flat and thick outer coat of coarse hair lying over a dense wooly undercoat. Regular brushing will keep it in good condition but a little extra care is needed when they shed the undercoat. The outer coat does not mat so the care is relatively easy.
The Great Pyrenees are prone to hip dysplasia and can develop skin problems in very hot weather.
Great Pyrenees has a long history in its native France as a guard dog of sheep, but it is believed the breed actually originated earlier from either Asia or Siberia. During the Middle Ages they gained popularity with French Nobility as a guard dog. Born to live in the mountains this versatile breed protected flocks from predators such as wolves and bear.
