The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is a large, muscular, strong draft dog. The forelegs are straight and strong with rounded compact feet. This dog is a striking tri-colored, powerful and confident dog with a sturdy appearance. A Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is heavy boned and well-muscled and, in spite of its size and weight, is agile enough to perform all of its duties.

These dogs are steady, watchful and protective but not aggressive. Willing and ready to please, they are excellent with children. They are normally good with other pets and are not generally animal aggressive. And while they do get along with family pets they do need to be taught not to chase them.

An excellent, courageous watchdog, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog will bark at strange noises and intruders. They need to be part of the family and actually prefer to be with their people at all times. They are slow to mature, both physically and mentally so their puppy hood may last 2-3 years.

Being an average shedder, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is easy to groom with only regular brushing. They do not require any trimming or stripping.

As with most large deep-chested dogs the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is prone to both bloat and hip dysplasia. Many times these dogs have extra eyelashes that grow along the edge of the eyelid which sometimes curl inward and scratch the eye. Although it doesn’t normally present a problem there are times when it may require surgical correction.

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog comes to us from the farms and villages of the Swiss Alps. The breed was in danger of dying out but was rediscovered when the breed was once again publicized. The first Greater Swiss Mountain Dog was brought to the United States in 1967 and is still a fairly rare breed.
