Nothing short of a true mountain breed, the Haflinger Pony is known for its beauty, surefooted nature, and longevity. Many Alpine Haflingers will live to 40 or beyond.
Naturally, they are a sound and hardy breed. This is an attribute credited to their mountain heritage. The custom of Alpine pasturing is said to give the Haflingers stronger hearts and lungs, thanks to the thin air of the high altitudes. That said, Haflingers raised outside of their mountain home, are still known for their longevity and healthy constitutions.
Conformationally, the Haflinger Pony exhibits a good, deep girth. The legs are muscular with short cannons and durable hooves that make the pony well suited to rocky terrain and snow. Aesthetically, they are always palomino or chestnut with stunningly contrasting flaxen manes and tails.
The Haflinger Pony can be used as a harness pony or under saddle. It also works as a light farm or woodland horse. It's especially beneficial in areas where there are few roads and the maneuverability of an experienced stead can be a priceless asset, particularly on mountain terrain. Not just limited to hard work, the Haflinger is also a popular riding and driving pony.
Though they are coldbloods, a term indicating that the breed is descended from the prehistoric European Forest Horse, they have eastern blood and can trace their ancestry to the Arabian foundation stallion, El Bedavi - a prominent and infamous horse imported by an Austrian commission in the nineteenth century.
The Haflinger Pony originated in the Hafling village of the Atschlander Mountains and remains a treasured horse in its homeland and abroad.
