The Harrier is similar to the English Foxhound, but smaller. It is a compact dog that is quick, hardy and possesses a great sense of smell. They are a muscular hunting hound with a short, hard coat and are built with a large bone structure for stamina and strength.
Harriers are outgoing and friendly and working as a pack breed they must be able to work in close contact with other hounds. Therefore, aggressiveness has been almost eliminated from the breed. They are cheerful, sweet-tempered and tolerant with children. They are good with other dogs but should be supervised with non-canine pets unless they were raised with them.
The Harriers expression is mellow when the dog is relaxed and very alert when he is excited. They can become a nuisance if they don’t have enough outdoor space and exercise. Sometimes they can get pretty noisy, as they like to “bay.”
Grooming a Harrier is very easy thanks to the short, dense, hard and glossy coat and only minimal brushing is needed to comb out the dead hair.
The Harrier is generally a very healthy breed with no serious genetic defects although some instances of hip dysplasia have occurred. And there have been a few recorded cases of Epilepsy.
There are several different versions of the Harriers origins, but in any case today’s Harriers are between the Beagle and English Foxhound in size and was developed primarily to hunt hare, though they have also been used in fox hunting.
