The Havanese is a sturdy dog that is covered with long, untrimmed, silky wavy hair. Both the dark eyes and long tail are covered with long, silky hair. They give a rugged impression of a little dog that is sturdy but not fragile or overdone.

Because they are so gentle and responsive the Havanese are natural companion dogs. They become very attached to their human families and are excellent with children. Not only are they affectionate and playful they also hold a high degree of intelligence. They are exceptionally cheerful and are very social with everyone including people, dogs, cats, etc.

They are very sensitive to the sound of your voice and harsh words will only upset them and achieve very little. They learn quickly and really enjoy doing things for people. Even the AKC states that they are playful and alert as well as trainable and intelligent with a sweet disposition.

The Havaneses’ coat can be clipped short for easier care of left long. If it is left long they need to be thoroughly brushed and combed at least twice a week. Since the actually shedding is minimal dead hair needs to be removed by brushing.

The Havanese is a very healthy long-lived breed, but they can have health problems. Some are prone to PRA, cataracts and luxating patellas.

They are a member of the long-haired Bichon family of dogs and were originally bred in Europe as lap dogs for the aristocracy. The breed almost became extinct in the late 1960’s but one breeder was able to bring a lot of attention to these dogs and their popularity grew.
