The Holsteiner Horse is a carriage horse, meaning it was originally bred to be a relatively light horse that is not only elegant in its stature and step, but also strong enough to take a carriage. The Holsteiner is a fine example of this type. The frame is light and the sloped shoulders showcase defined withers well set to take a harness. Though the head is somewhat plain, the Holsteiner is an overall hard and handsome horse.

One of the Holsteiner's assets as a carriage horse is its high-stepping action that gives its walk a bit of showiness. The Holsteiner competes internationally as a carriage horse, and because of this was perfected for the sport through selective breeding and extensive training.

But, all things must change and after the Second World War, the breed, like many others, had to adapt to modernization and become more of an all-purpose riding horse. The automobile reigned supreme and outside of the competitive world, there was little need for horses to pull carriages. Because of this, the Holsteiner, as a breed, became even lighter and has gone on to achieve status as a champion jumper and saddle horse.

The Holsteiner is one of Germany's oldest warmbloods, so despite its high-spirited ancestry, the breed has been developed for decades to be tractable, gentle, and willing. Known for its calm and staying personality, the Holsteiner makes a popular choice for riders looking for a horse with good power and temperament.

The breed originated in the Elmshorn district of Holstein and the main breeding center is still there today. It's presence was recorded as early as 1300 and it was very popular in the Middle Ages. Later on, by crossing the Holsteiner Horse with the Thoroughbred, it brought out the horse's lighter frame and galloping ability, but introducing the Cleveland Bay bloodline is what created the solid and steady temperament that makes the horse so popular today.
