The Ibizan’s clean-cut lines, large ears and light pigment give it a unique appearance. Lithe and racy, they possess a deer-like elegance combined with the power of a hunter. Strong, without appearing heavily muscled they are able to spring to great heights from a standstill.
The Ibizan Hound, sometimes called “Beezers” is even-tempered, affectionate and loyal. They are extremely versatile and trainable making an excellent family pet. When working in the field they exhibit a keen, natural hunting instinct with much determination and stamina. Be careful with small pets such as rabbits and cats as they have been bred to hunt these creatures. If a cat is raised with an Ibizan Hound it will fit in fine, but they will chase and possibly one that it does not know.
The Ibizan thinks its humans are their pack so any addition (animal, baby) must be introduced slowly. They will actually blush when they get excited and they love to learn. However, they are sensitive to the voice of their handler and a friendly request will get you more than a rough command.
As an average shedder the Ibizan Hound only requires an occasional brushing. If you rub a rubber glove over their coat it will shine. You do need to check the ear passages frequently to make sure they are clean.
Although a hardy breed, the Ibizan Hound can have allergic reactions to drugs, including insecticides and flea powders. They are also prone to nerve and muscle diseases.
Several examples of Egyptian art depict dogs closely resembling the Ibizan Hound and may have been brought to the islands off the coast of Spain. This breed is very fast and they were used to hunt rabbit and other small game.
