The Icelandic Sheepdog is a Nordic herding spitz, slightly under medium-sized with prick ears and a curled tail. They appear to have a gentle expression and are known for being intelligent and happy. Icelandic Sheepdogs tend to be tough and energetic, making them hardy and agile which is useful in herding.

Icelandic Sheepdogs are by nature very alert and will always give visitors an enthusiastic welcome without being aggressive. They are friendly, inquisitive, and most adore children and get along well with other pets.

This is a very active breed that needs to be exercised every day, as in daily walks or jogs. However a great play session will work as well. They need close contact with their family and if left alone with have “home alone anxiety” problems.

The Icelandic Sheepdog has a double coat, thick and extremely weatherproof. They can be either long or shorthaired. They do shed and twice a year the shedding becomes very heavy. Daily brushing should keep the coat in good condition.

Experts say that the Icelandic Sheepdog is a very healthy breed and are not prone to any common problems.

This breed is thought to be one of the oldest dog breeds and was brought to Iceland by Vikings. The Icelandic Sheepdog is Iceland’s only native dog and has been portrayed on postage stamps there.
