The Irish Red and White Setter’s appearance is strong, powerful, well balanced and proportioned. They appear aristocratic with a keen and intelligent attitude. When moving at a trot their gait is long striding, graceful and efficient with their head held high.

They display a kindly and friendly attitude along with courage and high spirit. They have no guarding instincts, get along with other animals and are good with children. Some can be difficult to train, perhaps as a result of their independent spirit.

They are used for all types of hunting and have an excellent sense of smell over any terrain in any climate. The Irish Red and White Setter tends to pick up bad habits quickly so training should start when they are very young. They make a quiet family friend when indoors while being exuberant outdoors.

Daily brushing and combing of the soft, flat medium-length coat is all that is required to keep it in excellent condition. Keep it free from burrs and tangles and give it a little extra care when the Irish Red and White Setter is molting.

A minor form of cataract, PPC (Posterior Polar Cataract) does not lead to blindness but it is something to watch for in the Irish Red and White Setter. They also have a predisposition to hip dysplasia and hypothyroidism.

The original Irish Setters were parti-colored, red and white while the solid red Setters were rare. The red Irish Setter gained in popularity and the Irish Red and White Setters almost became extinct. Fortunately there was renewed interest in the breed and they continue to thrive.
