The Irish Setter’s profusely feathered silky coat comes in rich shades of chestnut to mahogany. Their coat is long and silky except for the head where it is short and fine. They are an active, aristocratic bird dog that is substantial yet elegant in their build.
Irish Setters are energetic, intelligent, affectionate, high-spirited and full of energy. They have no guarding instincts and get along with other animals and children. They can be giddy and high strung while others are more reserved.
They are lovable and impulsive, yet can be difficult to train because of their independent spirit. Possibly the best description of this breed is that they have a rollicking personality and shyness or timidity are uncharacteristic of the breed. An outgoing, stable temperament is the essence of the Irish Setter.
Grooming the Irish Setter takes quite a bit of time. The feathering requires the most attention otherwise it will quickly become matted. Daily brushing is only the minimum grooming requirement, check for burrs and tangles frequently.
The Irish Setter tends to bloat so it may be wiser to give them 2 or 3 small meals a day instead of one big one. They are particularly prone to epilepsy, severe skin allergies and ear infections.
The earliest ancestors were not solid red but red and white and became popular in the 18th century. The history is a little sketchy but it is believed they were developed from an English Setter – Spaniel – Pointer – Gordon Setter mix.
