The Irish Wolfhound is a massive, muscular dog and one of the tallest breeds in the world, sometimes reaching the size of a small pony. When standing on their hind legs they can reach up to 7 feet tall. Overall, the Irish Wolfhound gives the appearance of both strength and grace.

Despite their size the Irish Wolfhound is sweet-tempered, patient, generous and very intelligent. They are excellent with children and unconditionally loyal to their owner and family. Not a guard dog by nature, but they can be a deterrent simply because of their size.

They do have a tendency to be clumsy as they are slow to mature and takes at least 2 years to mature. The Irish Wolfhound is relatively easy to train, responding well to firm but gentle training. It is important to teach them not to pull on their leash before it gets too strong.

The Irish Wolfhound’s rough medium-length coat requires regular and thorough grooming with a brush and comb. About once or twice a year you need to pluck the coat to remove excess dead hair.

When it comes to health the Irish Wolfhound is prone to bone cancer, bloat, PRA as well as hip dysplasia. It is recommended that you have a large yard and take them on daily walks.

Their ancestors were the CU, a massive shaggy coated dog used for the pursuit of wolves, elk and wild boar. The Irish Wolfhound were often given as royal presents and eventually became such popular gifts; Oliver Cromwell had to stop their export from Britain.
