The Italian Greyhound is very similar to the Greyhound, but much smaller and more slender in all proportions as well as ideal grace and elegance. The expressive eyes are large and dark. They possess a high-stepping gait as well.

The Italian Greyhound is a gentle, submissive and affectionate dog. Typically, they become much attached to their masters and can be reserved with strangers. Playful and intelligent, generally these dogs are not difficult to train provided their handler is consistent with them.
They have a tendency to be mischievous and are usually aware of it.

They can be high strung and timid and need to be handled gently. The Italian Greyhound is more suited to a quiet household where there are no lively children. In any type of stressful situation they can require constant reassurance by stroking. They are very dependent and peaceful but can be snappish if frightened.

Being one of the easiest dogs to groom, the Italian Greyhound only requires a rubdown with a towel or chamois to keep their silky coat gleaming. Only bathe if absolutely necessary and make sure you dry them thoroughly.

The Italian Greyhound is actually hardier than it appears. The adult dog is not delicate but until the age of about 18 months their bones are fragile and can break a leg rather easily. They are prone to PRA and epilepsy.

The Italian Greyhound is a very old breed of Greyhound. Interestingly, a dog similar to the Italian Greyhound of today was found in a 6000-year-old Egyptian tomb and a small Greyhound was found in an ancient lava flow in Pompeii.
