The Japanese Chin is a dainty spaniel with a short broad face and a soft-feathered coat. Strongly built, compact and yet refined. Their protruding eyes are very expressive and dark and their darling tails curl up over the back – giving the dog a uniquely spunky appearance.

The Japanese Chin is a charming and happy animal, very pleasant, loving and intelligent, and extremely devoted to its master. This breed loves everyone it is familiar with but is typically reserved around strangers and in unfamiliar situations.

They are good with other dogs and pets, but have a mind of their own and like to be the center of attention. The Japanese Chin is more obedient than most toy breeds and is quick to learn. Overall, they are considered mild mannered, elegant and yet playful.

A few minutes each day will keep the coat looking beautiful, comb out tangles and brush lightly. Be sure to clean their eyes every day and check the ears regularly for signs of infection.

Like many short-faced breeds the Japanese Chin tends to wheeze and snore. They are sensitive to temperature extremes and sometimes have eye and respiratory problems. As some lines are prone to distemper your vet may want to adjust the immunization schedule.

Despite its name, the Japanese Chin is probably native to Korea - the breed later being developed in Japan and introduced to Europe in 1700. It became a favorite of Japanese Court, and was often offered as a royal gift. Its greatest moment of popularity came in 1853 when a pair was given as a gift to Queen Victoria from Commodore Perry when he returned from his historic mission to open Japan to world trade.
