The Kai Ken is an athletic and sturdy breed. According to traditional Japanese writings, the Kai Ken is described as a natural hunter and guardian, one that is very devoted to its family. Because of their strong loyalty and natural protection instinct, the Kai Ken is often reserved and suspicious of strangers, but very friendly around people that it knows. Their alert and attentive behavior makes them a great watchdog and could be why this brave dog is considered a “national treasure” in its native Japan.
Normally, they’re good with other dogs and rarely show signs of aggression. While the Kai Ken can be a dominant breed, they’re not overly aggressive or likely to start fights with other dogs. They tend to fit in well into most family situations, particularly when socialized from a young age.
For grooming, occasional brushing or combing should suffice, taking care to remove mats or knots in the soft undercoat. The Kai Ken should only bathe if absolutely necessary. In terms of appearance, the ears seem large in proportion to the rest of the dog and are held erect. They have powerful, muscular thighs and are quite powerful. They also have a double coat, designed to protect it from the elements, it includes a straight outer coat and a soft dense undercoat.
The Kai Ken first developed in the province of Kai located on the island of Honshu in Japan, where it was used as a hunting dog. Because of their strong hunting background, this breed demonstrates incredible courage as well as agility, and it has been reported to swim and climb trees while tracking down its prey.
