Though only recently registered, the Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse has been bred for decades. It was originally bred by mountain dwellers for farming on mountainous terrain and as a general purpose horse. It became noticed in the 1980s because of its comfortable gait and surefooted nature. The Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse Association was formed in 1989 and the breed has been spreading in popularity ever since.

It is the Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse's natural 4-beat gait, its amble, that makes it so popular. Because of the gait, the rider sits very comfortable and feels very little movement. This smooth and gentle ride is especially beneficial over long treks on rough, mountainous terrain. When this steadiness is matched with the horse's gentle and tractable personality, you get a fantastic pleasure rider prized by many.

The Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse can be almost any color, even spotted or with white markings, but there is a separate association for spotted horses. Though the foundation for this breed is more about gait and conformation, including broad chests and uniquely angled shoulders, they are known for having flowing manes and tails, an asset that makes them attractive as well as practical.

To officially register a Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse, it must demonstrate its abilities under saddle, meet disposition standards, and have its DNA tested and on file with the University of Kentucky or the Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse Association.
