The Kooikerhondje is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon. Groups like the Kooikerhondje Club of Canada are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed in North America as well as preserving and celebrating it. For breed standards, breeders and showers refer to the three different breed standards maintained by the FCI, KC and the UKC, where the dog is considered a Gun Dog.

Kooikerhondje are typically accommodating to their families, enjoy work and love to swim. They’re great with children and will play fetch for hours. Overall, the Kooikerhondje is a non-aggressive dog, but can be somewhat territorial with strangers and mailmen.

This active breed was originally developed in the Netherlands during the sixteenth century. Intended to be a tolling breed, they were trained to drive ducks into narrow, trapped canals called “koois” – hence their name. The breed was officially recognized by the Dutch Kennel Club in 1971 and has gained popularity in Europe, though it’s still relatively rare in North America.

If you’re an active dog-owner who enjoys jogging with their dog or taking long trips to the waterfront, the Kooikerhondje is for you. They’re an ideal walking companion and extremely loyal to their beloved owners. Easily trained and very intelligent, the Kooikerhondje is an obedient dog that excels at field trials and pointing exercises. Their double coat doesn’t require clipping and holds up well in wet conditions.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, patellar luxation, epilepsy, hereditary nectrotizing myelopathy and vonWillebrand’s disease.
