The Lagotto Romagnolo is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon. Groups like the Lagotto Romagnolo US Club are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed in North America as well as preserving and celebrating it. For breed standards, breeders and showers refer to the three different breed standards maintained by the FCI, ANKC, KC, NZKC and the UKC, where the dog is considered a Gun Dog.

The Lagotto Romagnolo breed originated in Italy, specifically the Romagna sub-region. In Italian, “Lagotto Romagnolo” means “water dog from Romagna.” Traditionally, the dog was bred as a retriever and water dog, used by hunters to point and retrieve in water ways and marshlands.

Overall, the Lagotto Romagnolo is an extremely intelligent and very trainable dog that loves to work and please its master. This loyal dog responds well to a fair trainer and a variety of tasks. The Lagotto Romagnolo is also an active dog, making it a good choice for families on the go or owners who can commit to regular, long walks and lots of exercise.

The dog can be groomed in a variety of ways, with show grooming styles varying by region and taste. Most owners opt for a close trim that’s easier to maintain and keep free of tangles.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, eye problems and cerebral anomaly.
