Despite their small stature and sweet disposition, Lhasa Apsos make wonderful guard dogs – announcing every guest and visitor with vigorous barking and lots of excited jumping. When a stranger finally enters the house, they’ll be greeted with lots of sniffing and then a touch of aloofness while the Lhasa takes its time to assess the situation. This tiny dog was once bred as a watch dog in Tibet and it shows.
Like small children, Lhasa Apsos love to show off for guests, once they’ve been accepted. They’ll drop toys in your friend’s laps, roll over a hundred times and convince any guest to join them in a game of tug and war.
Though trainable, the Lhasa Apso can be a little stubborn. They show their insubordinate side by digging in their heels and simply refusing. Experienced trainers recommend interspersing play with training – giving the dog a dose of fun along with its medicine.
Because of their long and shiny coats, owners need to be prepared to invest a lot of time into grooming. If left to tangle, the coat will mat up into an unmanageable mess of hair. Because of their high-maintenance coats, some owners opt to clip the dogs down, though this can significantly detract from their regal appearance.
Overall, Lhasa Apsos do best with early training and dedicated groomers. They’re not for owners looking for an outdoor dog or one willing to go on long hikes.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, vanWillebrand’s disease, patellar luxation, entropion, cataracts, distichiasis and intervertebral disc disease. Back to the Dog Breeds Page
