Breed: Lovebirds and Parrotlets
  • Average Size: 4-7 inches
  • Average Lifespan: 10-30 years, depending on species and condition.

Often grouped together, Lovebirds and Parrotlets are types of small parrots. Lovebirds hail from Africa, while Parrotlets make their home in Central and South America.

Both are small, stocky birds that are normally predominantly green, but now come in a variety of colors and markings due to selective breeding. The Parrotlet is a bit smaller, usually 4 to 5 inches, and exhibits sexual dimorphism (that is, the two sexes look different from one another).

Many say that Lovebirds must be kept in pairs, but this is a myth. When provided with a partner, a Lovebird is less likely to form a deep bond with its owner. However, if you're unwilling to make a strong commitment to spend several hours each day cuddling and physically interacting with your lovebird, then you should purchase two. These very social birds will become depressed and possibly self-destructive if left alone for too long.

Unlike the relatively quiet and demure Parrotlet, Lovebirds can be quite vocal and very loud, so you, and your neighbors, need to be comfortable with that as well

Though there are no guarantees, the Parrotlet can also learn words and has been know to learn short commands. They're also quite social, like the Lovebird, and require daily stimulation for their physical and mental health.

Both birds require a fair-sized living space, lots of interesting toys, out-of-cage time, things to chew on, and a varied diet that consists of fruit, vegetables, seeds, and nuts.
