Lowchens enjoy backyard romps and long hikes with their owners. Indoors, they’re usually well-behaved and love to be up and close with their loved ones. Despite their often high-spirited nature, they’re perfectly content to take it easy lounging on your lap with a good pet.

Overall, the Lowchen has a solid attention span and a great memory, making them a good dog for obedience training. They learn quickly and respond well to positive reinforcement, exhibiting good manners and a sweet disposition. Typically, the Lowchen is good with people and gets along well with other animals.

Because of its versatility, the Lowchen is a great dog for active families or lone apartment dwellers. However, the Lowchen isn’t a dog that likes to be left alone for long periods and owners should be prepared to give their dogs lots of love, stimulation and attention.

This spunky and loving dog is considered a nonshedding breed, but regular brushing is required. The Lowchen actually sheds into its own coat, so while hair doesn’t get all over your furniture, it can get tangled within the coat if neglected.

Historically, the Lowchen breed is believed to have descended from the Bichon Frise, but its history is somewhat shrouded. It is an old breed though and thought to go back as far as the sixteenth century.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy, patellar luxation and cataracts.
