Breed: Macaw
  • Average Size: 30 inches, depending on species
  • Average Lifespan: 40-65 years

The largest member of the Parrot family, some Macaws will reach 50 inches in length and have been rumored to live up to a hundred years in captivity. There are 23 subspecies of Macaws, but they are all known for their colorful plumage, powerful beaks, and free spirits.

Having not been bred in captivity for very long, captive life can be very difficult for the Macaw. These intelligent birds require a lot of daily attention and stimulation. They can sometimes be stubborn, and have been known to screech, bite, or engage in feather plucking, a self-destructive mutilation. However, if you are willing to invest time and love into your relationship with these beautiful birds, you will be rewarded with an engaging, funny, and loyal companion.

Macaws are monogamous, this means that they will only have one mate for their entire lives. In captivity this means that Macaws will often only bond with one person. They can trust other humans, but this needs to be worked on slowly, with family members being introduced carefully over time.

Like most parrots, Macaws love chew toys and will happily destroy any chewable toy you put in front of them. They also enjoy interactive games like peek-a-boo, hide-and-seek, and mimicking.

Because they're so large, provide lots of cage space for the Macaw as well as a healthy and varied diet consisting of fruit, vegetables, and nuts.

The Macaw is native to Central and South America. Only captive bred Macaws may be sold as pets.
