Some will say that the Maine Coon is unique because of its thick, glossy, water-resistant coat, but the first thing most people notice about a Maine Coon tends to be its size. Though it can take these cats three to five years to reach full maturity, they are one of the largest domestic breeds in the world. Their big bodies and long bushy hair make them well equipped to handle those New England winters.

Maine Coons are known to be large, but also gentle. They can be very playful and often maintain a kittenish disposition well into adulthood. Though Maine Coons like people, they're fairly independent. Rather than sitting on your lap, Maine Coons prefer to simply be in the room with you or sitting next to you. Maine Coons also like to stay close to the ground, so you may not see them performing giant leaps or peering down at you from atop the refrigerator.

One of the oldest natural breeds in the United States, the Maine Coon has a bit of a disputed history. Some legends suggest the Maine Coon is a cross between a raccoon and a cat, and though genetically impossible, it is an interesting story. The more likely one is that the Maine Coon, as a breed, developed through natural selection as cats brought over from Europe survived based on their ability to withstand harsh winters.
