The Maltese breed is believed to be thousands of years old. Originally bred as companion dogs, the Maltese is thought to have descended from Swiss Spitz varieties that were bred down to achieve its diminutive size. Its exact geographical origins are unknown, but the Maltese have been favored by Roman emperors, French rulers and English queens throughout history.
Because the Maltese was originally bred as a companion dog, it loves to be with its owners. They’re the perfect dog for owners who like to spend a lot of time with their dogs. They typically enjoy play time and a lot of attention – meaning the Maltese usually responds well to obedience training that uses positive reinforcement.
While the show coat of a Maltese is pristine, pure, white and luxurious, that veneer doesn’t come with a lot of hard work. Long show coats are typically wrapped and tied to prevent urine or dirt stains as the long show coat can easily sweep up dust and debris. Most recreational pet owners opt to keep their Maltese dogs trimmed.
Beautiful and tempered, the Maltese makes a wonderful apartment dog. They’re also very mobile and love to travel. Watch out though, their sweet disposition makes them an easy dog to spoil. Owners should be ready to curb this impish instinct.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy, glaucoma, patellar luxation, entropion, hypothyroidism, hypoglycemia and deafness. The Maltese can also be prone to sunburn, especially along their hair parts. Owners should exercise caution on especially sunny days.
