The Malti-Pom is not a purebred dog, nor is it an AKC recognized breed. Malti-Pom dogs are a hybrid or cross breed developed from the Pomeranian and the Maltese. However, the cross is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).
Though the Malti-Pom cross can pull behavioral characteristics from both the Maltese and the Pomeranian, the Malti-Pom is best known for its playful attitude and its soft, non-shedding, Maltese-like coat. Prospective owners enjoy that they can typically expect a dog that’s an energetic little imp and also boasts the non-shedding coat and intelligence of the Maltese.
Malti-Pom dogs do best indoors. Their exercise needs are moderate, but they enjoy regular walks or the occasional trip under your arm. Most Malti-Poms love to romp in the snow. These little travelers also love to travel and they’re a great dog for an urbanite looking for a sweet, friendly dog that’s up for anything.
Like their Pomeranian and Maltese ancestors, Malti-Pom dogs have a regal, but still playful attitude. They love to learn new tricks and they love showing them off even more. Both the Pomeranian and the Maltese tend to be fearless dogs, ready to tackle and play with any dog, even Great Danes and Rottweilers. Owners should exercise caution when playing with large dogs as this playful instinct can sometimes be dangerous.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy, glaucoma, patellar luxation, entropion, hypothyroidism, hypoglycemia and deafness. Typically though, hybrid breeds are less vulnerable to breed-specific or genetic health issues.
