The Malti-Poo is not a purebred dog, nor is it an AKC recognized breed. Malti-Poo dogs are a hybrid or cross breed developed from the Poodle and the Maltese. However, the cross is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).

Though the Malti-Poo cross can pull behavioral characteristics from both the Maltese and the Poodle, the Malti-Poo is best known for its incredibly sweet expression and soft, shed-free coat.

These darling, little dogs match a soft, cuddly coat with a teddy-bear like body structure and a lovable face that’s hard to resist. Owners need to be careful not to spoil this little darling. Watch out, they’re smart and pretty!

Like their Poodle and Maltese ancestors, Malti-Poo dogs are wonderful lap dogs and great companions. They enjoy nothing more than spending hours on your lap, being pet and lavished with attention. Malti-Poo dogs do best indoors. Their exercise needs are moderate, but they enjoy regular walks or the occasional trip under your arm.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy, glaucoma, patellar luxation, entropion, hypothyroidism, hypoglycemia and deafness. Typically though, hybrid breeds are less vulnerable to breed-specific or genetic health issues.
