The Manchester Terrier is an adaptable dog – able to enjoy life in an urban condo or on a ranch in Montana. Their energy levels are high, but they’re not a hyperactive dog ready to destroy your home every time you go out. That said, this active dog still needs a healthy amount of daily exercise.

Overall though, the Manchester is sleek, elegant and well-mannered. They’re also accomplished ratters, originally bred for their slim bodies that allowed them to go underground and hunt out rats and other creepy, crawly vermin. The breed is said to be the oldest known terrier breed, dating back to the 16th century.

The Manchester Terrier has been described as “cat-like” because of its curiosity and propensity to clean itself. Usually, a Manchester doesn’t tolerate dirt or odor, so owners should consider themselves lucky.

For multi-family households, the Manchester is a great fit. They usually get along well with other dogs, though they tend to prefer other Manchester Terriers. While not a dominant dog that’s apt to challenge other dogs in the house, the Manchester is still brave enough not to back down if confronted. While Manchesters tend to get along well with everyone in the family, they often favor one person most.

When it comes to training, the Manchester Terrier tends to learn quickly, especially with positive reinforcement. They excel at Earthdog tests, tracking, obedience and flyball. With steady training, they can be real obedience leaders.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy, Legg-Perthes, seizures and hypothyroidism.
