The Mangalarga Marchador is the National Horse of Brazil and there are over 350,000 registered horses in its home country alone. This popular horse is known for its stature, smooth ride, and grace.
The name of the breed, Marchador, is the very essence of it. “Marchador” translates to “the marcher” in English. So, the horse is gaited, meaning it is schooled to either artificial or natural walks. The Mangalarga Marchador's gait is smooth, controlled, and rhythmic. It is said to be very comfortable for the rider and is the reason behind the Marchador's popularity as a trail riding horse in its native Brazil.
Though it's a smaller, lighter horse, the Mangalarga Marchador is strong and muscular with a fine carriage. The head is triangular with a wide and flat forehead. It leads down a long, pyramidal neck to the horse's powerful body and surefooted legs. The Mangalarga's agility is accredited to its well-built limbs and sturdy hooves.
The horse is also said to be very intelligent. It responds easily to training and has an alert look about it, one made more pronounced by its prominent and attentive eyes. Most colors are accepted by breed standards but the most common are gray and bay.
Not just for pleasure riding, the Mangalarga Marchador is also used for ranging, jumping competitions, and dressage - a sport designed to test a horse's training, responsiveness to commands, grace, and agility.
Though the horse is extremely popular in Brazil, it is still fairly rare in the United States. According to the newly formed USMMA, or United States Mangalarga Marchador Association, there are an estimated one hundred forty horses in the United States.
