Laid back and relaxed, Mastiffs are low-key and subdued dogs. They tend to be calm and quiet indoors and don’t require too much exercise. However, if they’re prompted by an enthusiastic owner, they will play along and go for nature walk or a romp in the park. They love playing with kids and are always ready to get dirty.
Mastiffs aren’t predatory, making them a nice choice for multi-animal households. They’re also not very dominant, meaning a Chihuahua can sometimes be the boss of this giant, but extremely gentle breed. Some lines of the breed can be more aggressive, but overall, the contemporary Mastiff isn’t usually bred to be an attack or guard dog. When purchasing a Mastiff for your family, look for dogs with easygoing temperaments, soft dispositions and an easily trainable personality.
Historically, all Mastiffs descend from the ancient Molosser and Alaunt breeds and are thought to have first appeared in Britain in the 6th century BC. Traditionally, the dogs were used for fighting, bear baiting and other blood sports. However, the breed has subdued significantly, becoming more of a gentle giant than a vicious bear fighter.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, hypothyroidism, eye defects, cardiomyopathy, strokes, bloat, epilepsy and spondylosis. Because large dogs are often more susceptible to genetic disorders, prospective buyers should always ask to see the parents and feel comfortable requesting genetic screening.
