The Miniature Pinscher or Min Pin, as they’re sometimes called, is a bit like a toddler. They’re always busy, very curious and often find themselves getting into things they shouldn’t. Prospective owners should keep a careful eye on their dogs, especially as puppies, and be ready to thoroughly puppy-proof their homes – both to protect their possessions and the health of the dog.
Small, ingestible items need to be carefully tucked away along with poisons or toxic chemicals that could hurt your dog. Because the Min Pin is so small and athletically capable, most owners find a baby gate or large fence won’t hold this highly intelligent and very driven animal.
Although the Miniature Pinscher looks like a Doberman, it’s not descended from this breed. Rather, the relatively new Doberman Pinscher breed was actually bred to resemble the sleek and handsome Min Pin.
The breed’s lively temperament means Mini Pinschers work best in active households. Because of their small size and delicate frames, they’re not usually recommended for families with small children or homes where rough play could pose a danger.
When it comes to training, Mini Pinschers are fantastic at obedience and agility training. Trainers should be upbeat, on the ball and prepared to give firm instruction along with lots of positive reinforcement.
Miniature Pinschers are easily groomed, usually requiring little more than regular brushing and a quick eye cleaning. In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, Legg-Perthes disease, progressive retinal atrophy and pannus.
