Average Size: 13.2 hh (54 in)Breed: Misaki Horse
- Feral pony
- Japanese
- Very rare
Because of its conformation and size, the Misaki Horse is technically a pony. This rare breed has survived for centuries in Japan and is distinguished by its bay or black coloring, thin legs, and its hind legs that are noticeably longer than the front limbs.
The breed originated in Japan but is probably descended from horses that accompanied the Chinese to the islands over two thousand years ago. They inhabit the meadow of Toimisaki and are a feral and protected breed.
Only about one hundred of these historic beasts remain and they are considered a national treasure in Japan. Once a year, the horses are corralled for vaccinations, health checks, and sometimes castration. Other than this annual exercise, they are left alone as a feral breed and living part of Japanese history.
