The Moroccan Barb originated in North Africa in the eighth century; arriving in the region with the spread of Islam. It is unknown whether the Barb and Arabian share a common ancestor or if the Arabian is a predecessor. The African Barb Horse is one of the most influential breeds in the world thanks to heavy influence on Spanish stock, a mark that has made its way to the Americas and beyond.
There are three types of Barbs – the Morrocan Barb, the Algerian, and the Tunisian. The Moroccan Barb is normally gray, but can come in other colors. It has powerful front legs that lead up to high withers and a short back with a narrow croup. The hooves are small but rounded and the horse is well suited to desert climates.
The Moroccan Barb is able to maintain high speeds over long distances with little water and in extreme heat. Though it is bred for stamina and endurance, the Barb is also a powerful sprinter and known for fast starts. It is most often used as a light riding horse and is the traditional mount of the Spahi cavalry of the French army.
Though just as influential, the Barb is not as famous as the Arabian but it is just as fiery. The Barb can be a high-spirited horse and is known for not being skittish and having a temper. It is not a recommended mount for inexperienced or young riders.
Today, it is rare to find a pure Barb but modern Barbs are bred primarily in Morocco, Spain, and France. In an effort to promote and preserve the breed, the World Organization of the Barb Horse was founded in Algeria in 1987.
