The Mudi is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but it will be soon. Groups like the American Mudi Association and the Mudi Club of America are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed in North America as well as preserving and celebrating it. For breed standards, breeders and showers refer to the three different breed standards maintained by the FCI, CKC and the UKC.

This active breed was originally developed in the Hungary as a herding or pastoral dog, intended to protect flocks, hunt vermin and be an all-round, versatile farm dog.

The Mudi is a rare breed and prospective owners may have to wait to take home a puppy from this loyal and adaptable breed. As a farm dog, the Mudi is typically very dedicated to its family, exhibiting a high protection instinct and an eagerness to be involved in family business. As a herder, the Mudi can be somewhat reserved with strangers and often prefers to watch guests from afar before warming up to them.

This faithful dog has the endurance and stamina to go out for a long jog, but is relaxed enough to enjoy spending the day inside. Ideally though, the Mudi is best suited for active owners able to give it exercise, love and attention.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, patellar luxation, epilepsy, hereditary nectrotizing myelopathy and vonWillebrand’s disease.
