The Norfolk Terrier is vivacious, peppy and friendly. These easygoing dogs fit in well with both large families and single households. What these dogs lack in size, they more than make up for in intelligence, tenacity and physical agility.
Norfolk Terriers have an abundance of energy and need to be exercised every day. While they’ll get along fairly well with a daily walk, they need much more than twenty minutes on the leash to occupy their minds. Norfolk Terriers can be inclined to destroy the yard, household furniture and other items if there aren’t appropriate items available for them to play with.
Although these dogs are calm and easy to train, you will need to establish consistent rules and routines to keep them feeling comfortable. The Norfolk Terrier gets along easily with children and animals. Unfortunately, they can get jealous of other household members and express it by breaking household rules.
Typically, these dogs are hearty and suffer few health problems. You will need to be careful about the breeder you purchase the dog from, as there are a number of puppy mills that will doc the tails of other dog breeds and sell them as Norfolk Terriers. Norfolk terriers require daily grooming to manage their double coats. Usually shampooing isn’t necessary. Nails should be kept short.
The Norfolk Terrier was only recognized as a distinct breed in 1979. Even though the Norfolk Terrier may be distinguished from the Norwich Terrier by its rounded ears, their history is the same. Both types of dog originated in England and were used extensively to hunt foxes and smaller vermin.
