The Norwegian Buhund is a well balanced, energetic dog. While they're friendly and good with children, adult supervision is necessary in the event another dog encounters them. Typically, the Buhund can be both aggressive and dominant with other canines. Because Norwegian Buhunds are strong and protective, they’re the ideal dog to take along if you routinely jog or walk alone.
As with other herding dogs, the Norwegian Buhund is very intelligent and requires plenty of play and exercise. This dog is not suitable for a household where it will be left alone for long hours. When left without adequate stimulation, the Norwegian Buhund can easily become destructive and a problem barker.
Although the Norwegian Buhund loves to be around humans, it can be difficult to train and has an independent mind. It’s important to keep an eye on these dogs when they are outdoors, as they will chase anything that moves. This includes cars and nearby farm animals.
For the most part, the Norwegian Buhund will wash and care for its own coat. Twice a year these dogs go through a molting process. During molting, you will need to brush the dog several times a day and also shampoo in order to help remove the mats of hair.
The Norwegian Buhund tends to be very healthy, although some suffer from inherited cataracts. They also tend to do better in cooler climates.
The Norwegian Buhund originates in Norway. Historically, they have been used extensively as herding dogs in Norway and England. Some are still used for this purpose on various farms today.
