The Norwegian Elkhound is loyal to its family and useful in guarding children. While this dog is not overly aggressive with strangers, it can attack other animals. In particular, these dogs may not get along with other Norwegian Elkhounds of the same gender.
This dog tends to be playful and requires a great deal of exercise. It requires a minimum of one hour of brisk walking or jogging each day. The Norwegian Elkhound is not recommended if you live in an area where you cannot let it off a leash safely, as it has a tendency to wander and not answer when called. It can also easily become a problem barker.
While the Norwegian Elkhound is extremely intelligent, it is not known for obedience. It can be difficult to train and will insist on being equal with its human owner. This is also not a dog to train through punishment, as it has an adverse reaction to being treated unfairly.
The Norwegian Elkhound requires daily brushing and more during seasonal shedding. Shampooing should be kept to a minimum, as it will disrupt the natural oils that keep the coat healthy and shiny.
As with many other large dogs, the Norwegian Elkhound is prone to hip dysplasia and obesity. Pyotraumatic dermatitis and retinal atrophy are also common for these dogs.
The Norwegian Elkhound has been a loyal hunting companion to humans for thousands of years. They have aided in hunting everything from bears to rabbits. Many others have also been used to pull sleds in arctic environments. These dogs have also been used in warfare and can still be mobilized for this purpose.
