Much like its distant Maine Coon cousin, the Norwegian Forest Cat is built for cold weather durability. With their thick and fluffy, water-resistant double coats and their big, bushy tails, the Norwegian is well suited to the outdoors. They're also known for their size. As one of the larger domestic breeds, Norwegian Forest Cat males will often reach upwards of 20 pounds.

Norwegian Forest Cats are quite friendly and enjoy human company, but they're not necessarily dependent on it and will often come to you. Norwegians prefer to 'hang out' with you, as opposed to cuddling in your lap or being picked up. They're also fairly laid back and not easily startled, so they're good for families with children.

Well suited to the outdoors, Norwegians love to climb, whether they're up in trees or simply atop your bookshelves. They're also quite playful and will often engage in games of fetch or hide and seek.

The Norwegian Forest is a very old breed, native to Northern Europe, and a natural adaptation to the cold weather. In Norway they are known as Skogatter and are believed to be an ancestor to the equally large Maine Coon breed of North America.
