The Norwegian Lundehund is exceptionally good with children and will tolerate a great deal from family members. Unfortunately, this dog can be shy, which leads to fear barking. The Norwegian Lundehund doesn't like new situations or meeting new people. It will eventually adapt to strangers and not be aggressive during that process. However if raised with other pets and socialized early, the Norwegian Lundehund will accept easily.

Typically, the Norwegian Lundehund is very difficult to housebreak and has an independent mind. You will need a training crate, as these dogs do not respond well to discipline. It’s also helpful to find a trainer that has experience working with these dogs. Since the Norwegian Lundehund requires daily exercise, a lack of it can also cause problems.

Because these dogs have six toes and an extra joint in their neck, they are very agile. This can make them a special joy to play with for children and adults. With consistent training, the Norwegian Lundehund can easily win agility competitions and still be versatile enough to enjoy a home environment.

Several of these dogs suffer from Lundehund Syndrome, a digestive disorder. Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed way to know which dogs will develop this condition. If you cannot afford expensive medical bills, you are better off choosing a different kind of dog. Although the Norwegian Lundehund is a heavy shedder, it doesn’t need much combing or brushing. Shampooing should also be kept to a minimum. Nails should also be kept short.

The Norwegian Lundehund was utilized for centuries in Northern Norway to hunt Puffins. Since Puffins are now a protected species, there is very little active hunting use for these dogs.
