Although the Otterhound is good with children, its occasional tendency towards clumsiness makes it unsuitable for young children. The Otterhound tends to be friendly, outgoing and fairly easy to care for. Because these dogs are difficult to train, they're not recommended for first time dog owners.
The Otterhound requires plenty of daily exercise and enjoys a good long walk. If you are interested in personal fitness, this dog's relaxed temperament and energy levels makes for the ideal companion. Because these dogs are fantastic hounds and very sensitive to odors, they can easily pick up a scent and run off when off a leash. If you have a yard, it should be fenced in and secure. These dogs will also enjoy a good swim and have been known to enjoy this past time for hours on end. If you enjoy water sports, the active Otterhound may be the ideal companion for you.
Even though Otterhounds are intelligent and playful, they can be an annoyance to other pets. Their tendency to herd and chase smaller animals can lead to any number of clashes. Breaking them of these and other habits can be extremely difficult.
Typically Otterhounds don't require brushing more than once a week. Their nails should be kept short.
Obesity and bloat can be serious problems for Otterhounds. Moistening kibbles so that they expand before ingestion may be of some help. These dogs are also prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, hemophilia and thrombocytopenia.
Historically, Otterhounds were used to hunt bear, otter and mink. They are a cross between bloodhounds and several other dog breeds. Today these dogs are rare and can be hard to find.
