The Papillon is a beautiful little dog, with an obedient and enjoyable personality. They get along well with children, but may get jealous of other pets and strangers. Other than some issues with housebreaking, the Papillon is easy to train. Because these dogs are small and easy to care for, they're ideal for elderly people in need of an affectionate companion.

Typically, these dogs are very intelligent and easily learn tricks. Although the Papillon is usually quiet, it is not the ideal dog for city and apartment living; as it has difficulty determining which sounds warrant barking and which ones don't. These dogs also tend to be protective of anything they perceive as being part of their territory.

For the most part, the Papillon will take care of its own exercise needs during play time. While these dogs will also enjoy a good walk, a large fenced yard will be of use to them. These dogs should not be allowed off a leash, as they can easily be hit by passing vehicles, or come other kinds of harm.

Daily brushing or combing will keep a Papillon looking beautiful. It is also important to have their teeth cleaned on a regular basis, as they tend to build up tartar. For the most part, Papillons are very healthy. Some suffer from knee problems, but this can be surgically corrected.

Papillons trace their history back over 700 years and are known throughout Europe. They are seen in many Renaissance paintings and were also very popular in Italy. Papillons have served as loyal, good natured household companions throughout their history.
