Parakeet is a common term used to describe a large number of scientifically unrelated parrot species. However, most birds described as Parakeets are smaller breeds distinguished by their long tails. They are sometimes called Budgerigars.
Because of their popularity, Parakeets are bred all over the world, and therefore come in a wide variety of colors and marking patterns. Wild breeds normally have predominantly green coats, much like their Amazon parrot cousins.
Intelligent and social, Parakeets make fantastic companions for the owner willing to commit several hours each day for play and interactive time. Though it is never a guaranteed thing, most Parakeets can also learn to mimic words. In 2001, a Canadian named Ryan B. Reynolds released a tape of his Parakeet, Victor, using a vocabulary of over 1000 words and speaking in full sentences. The validity of this tape has not been confirmed, but Parakeets can develop large vocabularies. They're also quite good at associating commands with their meanings.
Despite being social, you should avoid putting a Parakeet in a cage with other breeds of birds, especially smaller ones. They can share space with other Parakeets, but you should keep a careful eye on them for the first few days to make sure they get along. Like people, all Parakeets don't automatically become best friends.
Their taste in toys also varies, but most birds like to chew wood things and need a few swings or perches to feel comfortable in their space. Try different toys with your Parakeet and see what they like before investing in a mass purchase.
Various types of Parakeets have been found throughout Australia, but some have also been discovered in parts of Florida.
