The Parson Russell Terrier is not an ideal dog for first time dog owners, or families with small animals. As hunting dogs, they can and will harm smaller animals. These dogs are also very intelligent and capable of climbing and jumping their way out of almost anything. Although these dogs can adapt to a household, they need to have a job that enables them to put their innate hunting and tracking abilities to good use.
While the Parson Russell Terrier tends to be good natured, it can get frustrated by lack of adequate exercise. It can also become very destructive and a problem barker. If left alone in a yard, they will dig holes. The Parson Russell Terrier also tends to be difficult to train.
If you want a small dog that is stronger than it looks, the Parson Russell Terrier is ideal. They can hold their own in a game of tug-of-war and are very agile in other games. Ideally, someone should always be home to keep these dogs company. While they can spend a day in a crate, they will not be happy.
The Parson Russell Terrier's short hair makes them easy to groom. Shampooing should be kept to a minimum.
Although these dogs tend to be healthy, they can develop knee and hip problems. Parson Russell Terriers are also prone to deafness and eye disorders.
Historically, the Parson Russell Terrier has also been called the Jack Russell Terrier. They were bred by Parson Russell in the 1800's. His objective was to have a dog that would hunt vermin and also dig foxes out of their burrows.
