From birth, Paso Fino Horses exhibit a gait that has made them renowned worldwide. The Paso Fino comes in all shapes, sizes and color variations. The only color pattern that the Paso Fino does not display is the Appaloosa. Body styles can vary from streamlined to stocky. The focus of the breed is all about the leg conformation and its trademark gaits, which are considered to be natural and therefore do not have to be taught.

For the Paso Fino's gait, there are three speeds. These are known as the Classic Fino, Paso Largo and Paso Corto. As well as gait speed, the horses are further categorized into two styles; the Performance and the Pleasure Style and the Classic Fino Style.

Like all American horses, the Paso Fino has its origins in Spain. In more recent history though, it is a direct derivative of the Peruvian Paso. The horse was imported to Puerto Rico and Columbia where the breed flourished. The Paso Fino of Puerto Rico is prized for its delicate and fine step, while the Colombian Paso Fino has a more rapid pace. The two types are bred separately to retain their purity.

The Paso Fino is a popular riding horse known for its comfortable ride. Because of its smoothness and steady pace, the breed gained popularity in the United States beginning in the 1950s. Today, the Paso Fino Horse Association oversees the growing breed registry in the U.S.
