The temperament of a Peek-A-Pom depends largely on the temperament of the parent dogs. Research is required into both the Pekingese and Pomeranian parents to determine what the puppies will grow up to be like. In general, the Peek-A-Pom is active and good natured.
Typically, the Peek-A-Pom will enjoy a household with children and will easily socialize with other pets. They are not recommended around small or boisterous children, as they are small and can be fragile. The Peek-A-Pom should also be kept out of traffic and crowds, as they can get lost or hurt easily.
At home, the Peek-A-Pom is clean and fairly easy to train and they’re ideal if you do not have a lot of room. The Peek-A-Pom is very capable of making its own fun, provided you give it plenty of toys to play with. Unfortunately, because they lose most of their coat twice a year, they aren't ideal for people with allergies.
Peek-A-Poms require very little brushing. Even though they’re light shedders, they can develop dandruff. Nails should be kept short.
As with many other mixed breed dogs, the Peek-A-Pom tends to be very healthy. That said, it's important to inspect the health of the parent dogs to determine what illnesses may come up.
Historically, the Peek-A-Pom is a fairly new, “designer” breed of dog. Both Pomeranians and Pekingese have a rich history of loyalty and companionship in the households they’ve lived in.
