Even though the Pekingese is a small dog, they aren’t recommended for first time dog owners, or families with young children. While the Pekingese is usually friendly with its family, it does not take to strangers. If you are looking for a small watch dog, these animals are ideal, as they are courageous and loyal.
The Pekingese will use passive aggression to get around training and other environmental factors not to its liking. As an example, it will go on hunger strikes to assert its independence and household dominance. On the other hand, if allowed, these dogs will quickly become obese.
Overall, the Pekingese can be an enjoyable, moderately playful companion dog. They can also be problem barkers if something disturbs them. These dogs are ideal in cities or apartments, as they do not require a lot of room, or exercise.
Daily brushing is required, as well as dry shampoo to help prevent mats and tangles. In particular, fur in the back needs to be cleaned, as there is a tendency toward soiling. Pekingese also need their face and eyes cleaned on a daily basis.
For small dogs, the Pekingese have a number of health problems. They are prone to heart and lung problems and also catch colds easily. The Pekingese are also apt to suffer from knee problems, ingrown eye lashes and herniated discs.
The Pekingese has a very venerable origin in China. They were used to chase away malicious spirits and were therefore prized animals. When the English invaded China in the 1800's, almost all of them were destroyed in order to prevent them from falling into enemy soldier hands. Only five of these exquisite dogs survived and were taken back to England.
