The Perro de Presa Canario makes the ideal guard dog. Unfortunately, they're difficult to train and can easily become vicious. They aren't ideal for first time dog owner, families with children, or people that are afraid of dogs. In some areas, these dogs may be on a restricted dog list for house insurance purposes.
For someone that owns a farm, the Perro de Presa Canario can be as versatile outdoors as in a family setting. These dogs are known to guard livestock and can take on just about any adversary. If properly trained, they will get along fairly well with other animals, including household cats.
For someone with a strong personality and the time to dominate the Perro de Presa Canario, these dogs can be ideal companions. They are loyal and content to accompany their owners on log jogs and walks. As part of the Mastiff family, these dogs tend to be intelligent, clean and otherwise easy to care for.
Typically, the Perro de Presa Canario needs little more than an occasional brushing. Their fur will also take on a shine if you rub over it with a towel. Nails should be kept short to prevent paw splaying.
Perro de Presa Canarios suffer from the usual dysplasia. They are also prone to epilepsy, mange, skin cysts and blood parasites.
The Perro de Presa Canario traces its origin to the Canary Islands. Mastiffs and other English dogs were crossed with animals native to the islands. These dogs occupied central roles as fighters, farm animal herders and guardians. The Perro de Presa Canarios were almost eliminated when dog fighting became illegal. Today, they enjoy popularity in Spain.
