Pharaoh Hounds are intelligent, friendly and ideal for families. They adapt well to children. Because Pharaoh Hounds are natural, agile hunters and agile, owners shouldn’t trust them around rabbits, cats and other, smaller household pets. Males will also become aggressive towards other dogs of the same gender.

While the Pharaoh Hound can be independent, consistency in training can result in a dog that wins obedience competitions. These dogs are very intelligent, but require socialization in order to prevent undue aggression towards strangers. In many cases, they will remain wary of people not a part of their families.

Any game that requires chasing is apt to be enjoyed by a Pharaoh Hound. They are avid hunters and need to run daily. If you are a jogger, these dogs will make ideal companions. They are not recommended for cities or households where they can’t get enough exercise. If you are going to let them off a leash, they should be in an area where they can roam freely without encountering traffic or other problems. Their instinct to hunt may well take them out of hearing range.

Pharaoh Hounds are very clean and require little in the way of brushing. Bathing and shampooing should be limited, as these dogs tend to have numerous chemical allergies.

Because Pharaoh Hounds are somewhat rare, their breeders are cautious about genetic health problems. They are also highly sensitive to insecticides and other chemicals.

The Pharaoh Hounds trace their origin back to African Hunting dogs. Although their name has an Egyptian connotation, their ancestry is not entirely Egyptian. Most of the modern dogs were bred for centuries in Malta. These fascinating dogs were often used for rabbit hunting.
