Breed: Pionus Parrot
- Average Size: 9-12 inches
- Average Lifespan: 25 years
Most Pionus breeds resemble Amazon Parrots with their striking, bright green bodies and splashes of red on their tail feathers. There are a number of Pionus' subspecies, but the most popular pet species tend to be the Blue-Headed, the Blue-Front Amazon, and the White-Capped Pionus. Each is distinctly different in its appearance.
Both the Blue-Front and the Blue-Headed are predominantly green with splashes of color indicated by their names. With both breeds, the coloring becomes deeper and more prominent as they age.
The White-Capped Pionus Parrot is about 8 to 10 inches long, with a deep, dark blue body, a light green belly, touch of olive on the shoulders, and, of course, white foreheads. They are sometimes bred to be green, but the blue is more common.
Unlike most parrots, the Pionus is comparatively quiet and reserved. If you're looking for a bird that may be more suited to apartment or shared living, the Pionus may just be for you. They're also not that into playing, so could be good for people that want a parrot, but may not be able to invest vast amounts of time into daily play and stimulation. Of course, you should always give your bird love and attention, but a Pionus just needs a different type.
The Pionus Parrot is also quite gentle and proper, so it's often a good fit for families with younger children. Despite their somewhat demure personalities, Pionus are known for their healthy appetites and can be somewhat susceptible to weight gain. Keep an eye on their diet, making sure that it's varied, healthy, and not too plentiful.
The Pionus is native to Central and South America. It's illegal to sell wild-caught Pionus Parrots.
