While Plott Hounds are not necessarily difficult to train, they do have limitations. They can learn basic obedience and some leash commands. It is better to keep them in an area where they can live outdoors. These dogs can be easily run over in traffic, as they tend to ignore oncoming cars.

Plott Hounds also need to be socialized at an early age in order to prevent undue aggression around strangers. These are primarily family dogs and hunters. They require a great deal of exercise. While Plott Hounds do not have a tendency to bark, their baying can easily become annoying.

These dogs are clean and require very little in the way of brushing. If you plan to use a Plott Hound as a hunter, or they frequent the woods, it’s important to check them for ticks and fleas. Their paws should also be examined for wounds. Nails should be kept short to prevent breakage and paw splaying.

Because Plott Hounds have a tendency to gulp their food, they can develop serious digestive problems. Wetting the kibbles so that they are already expanded may be of some help. These dogs should not have exercise after eating.

The Plott Hound is American, with no trace of European ancestry. These dogs were used to assist in hunting wild boar and bears. They are also skillful in managing coyote and wolves.
